I put on my first ballet shoes when I was 3-years-old. Since that day, dance has always been a part of my life. In 1998, I was first introduced to bboying. I remember learning how to six-step one random weekend, in my friend’s basement. Reflecting back on that day, I realize now how that moment would shape the rest of my life. My first time going to a battle was at St. Anne’s Church in southwest Detroit. At 17-years-old, it was a very powerful experience to be present in one room with a bunch of different kids, different backgrounds, and different cultures, with one common ground; the love of Hip Hop. 10 years has past since that day, and it’s been amazing to witness how much the Detroit scene has progressed. I stepped out for a couple of years, to raise my family and ironically they have become the same reason why I’m coming back. I believe there is a huge dichotomy between Hip Hop as a culture and Hip Hop as an industry. I believe we owe it to ourselves, our community and our children to keep the culture real and the scene progressing. I am fortunate to be a part of this organization- and to work with a very creative, talented and inspiring crew of individuals.
